BLACK RIPPLE KILN LOAN AND TRAINING PROGRAM
The Black Ripple Biochar Kiln Loan Program is a free service for residents of southern Humboldt County. I created it for people who want to make biochar but can't afford to buy the equipment. In order to qualify you need training, which I provide as well. My idea is for the program to be eventually picked up by an agency or receive funding to be developed further in scope.
Two kilns will be made available. Any resident or contractor in Southern Humboldt County can borrow a kiln once they get the free training to operate them.
The kilns will be available for pickup at a location in Garberville. They disassemble into 35-pound panels and lie flat in storage, so they fit easily in an ordinary hatchback, SUV or station wagon.
The program kicked off on November 1 with a kiln training at Benbow KOA. A second training took place November 15 at Southern Humboldt Community Park.
Trainees are now eligible to borrow a kiln at no cost. Here is an equipment checklist for trainees. A video of the Nov. 1 training is available below for trainees to review.
If you missed these trainings, sign up below to be notified about future ones. More public trainings have not been scheduled, but you can indicate interest in a private training on our own land.
