Introduction to Biochar

May 2, 2023 T. Gray Shaw

Trying out a garden shredder for grinding char.

The Institute for Sustainable Forestry pioneered lumber certification and hardwood milling in the 1990’s. By the time I joined in late 2018, its mission had become making biochar from excess fuel in fire-starved forests—which is why I joined. It was my mission too.

Just before Covid hit, Susan Nolan and I began giving workshops for ISF on how to make and use biochar. We called it our “Biochar Road Show.” After public events were prohibited, ISF pivoted to doing radio shows. In 2023, we resumed these workshops. (We still produce radio shows occasionally.)

In this recording from ISF’s bi-monthly program, we come full circle, presenting the road show on the radio.
